![]() Third Million Book and 10 pence Appeal for the children of South Africa We have reached 2.5 million books. Read more ... "Theres lots to know on a page Millions of children in South Africa have no books. Collect books for childrenThe campaign aim is to set up school libraries in South Africa so children will have access to books they enjoy reading: story books, novels, information books, the sort of book you would give a child or young person for their birthday or their Christmas. The idea is to help create a culture of reading by giving children access to books, therefore encouraging literacy and helping support school studies. We do not want text books except for those that fall into the categories above, including reading schemes. If in doubt check out our guidelines or phone for advice: Remember getting large amounts of books we cannot use means we have to pay money out of the campaign to recycle them. A book and 10 pence A Book and 10p is what we ask for, because we need your help to cover the costs including shipping books by the container-load to the children in South Africa. Let us do it together for the children of Nelson Mandela's rainbow nation. |

TWO AND A HALF MILLION BOOKS
Community H.E.A.R.T. has just shipped the 2.5 millionth children's book to South Africa to help set up school libraries. The latest container with 50,000 books left the Community H.E.A.R.T. storage facility in Longsight, Manchester on the 3rd of August and is now on it's way to township schools in the Western Cape. Community H.E.A.R.T. Director, Isobel McVicar said: "We have reached another great milestone, 2.5 million books and it's due to children, schools, churches and other organisations donating the books and volunteers helping to pack, sort and load the books. The Fire Brigade Union, Fire Service and UNISON (Public Service union) have helped us load over 500,000 books in the last few years and we need to give them and those who donated books a big thank you. We couldn't do it without them." Denis Goldberg, President and Founding Director of Community H.E.A.R.T., said: "We set up this campaign because education is the main way of getting our people out of poverty. Our children are our future, their minds need to be nourished they deserve to be nourished. It is only through education that we will overcome the legacy of apartheid and realise Nelson Mandela's vision of the rainbow nation." The campaign aim is to send children's books, not text books, which will be used to set up school libraries giving access to books to hundreds of thousands of children and young people in South Africa. The idea is to give access to books that children and young people want to read, the kind of books that create a love of reading. A love of reading will then impact on the children's ability to learn in their academic subjects. Schools, churches and organisations are encouraged to involve their children in donating the books they no longer read. Community H.E.A.R.T. aim to send another 500,000 books in the next couple of years. Isobel McVicar said: "We would really like to reach 3 million children's books in the next couple of years so we would like to ask schools, churches and others to consider taking up the campaign. It costs £2,500 just to send the container so we also need funds to help us continue the campaign." We need your financial help. |
