Why have guidelines? Because we want to be sure that the books we send over 6,000 miles are what the young people really want and need. We have discussed this in South Africa. The types of books are important. The condition of the books is also important.

We have seen children in a small country school where there is no electricity and no running water, enthusiastically using the "library", even if it is just a cupboard and a table holding a few hundred books we had sent.

TYPES OF BOOKS REQUIRED

THE CONDITION OF THE BOOKS

CONTENTS

To achieve the goals of the Book and 10p Appeal, we need:

  • Pre-reading material
    'Picture and a word'
  • Easy Readers
    Large print and Big Books
  • Story books
  • Childrens novels
  • Factual books
  • Reading scheme books
  • Dictionaries
    especially illustrated ones
  • Encyclopaedias

Books should be in good condition to be attractive to readers. Books weve read are fine, as long as they are in good condition.

The books must not make the young people who get them feel that we are saying, "Any old thing will do." Of course not!

The books go more than 6,000 miles by truck, ship and train. They must be worth sending!

Factual books and stories should be up-to-date, well illustrated, and accurate.

Factual books and storybooks should not be so culturally specific that they are inappropriate for South African children and must not be racist or sexist.
