2. If you have a child at school please ask the school to take up the project
The people who have children's books are children. The collection can be short and sharp or it can be extended.

Young people find the project is exciting and we know that they enjoy it. It is also a way of recycling those books we've read. But please see our Guidelines.

It is a fine basis for talking about many of the issues that arise. There is a fine history of apartheid written for GCSE studies. We have some copies and can make them available. If you need a speaker and we can find one near you we shall happily send one to your school. We are but a few people and cannot cover the whole country.

Children have shown that they immediately grasp that if they have books and there are children who don't, then sharing with them is the answer.

We also believe that it is important for young people to grasp that sending books to a far-off country costs money. They quickly grasp the need for our slogan, A Book and Ten pence, "to send each book over the sea to you from me".

3. If you are a school teacher please introduce the project to your school
We have a photographic exhibition that we can send you. It visually explains the need for the project and the joy it gives the recipients of the books.

Our audiotape of our Book and Ten Pence Song, and the Rap are great fun. The song is sung in English, Zulu and Sotho languages and the words are printed with a pronunciation guide on the insert. Learn the languages. The B side of the tape has an explanation of the project and the exhibition recorded by our Director Denis Goldberg. The exhibition and the tape can make an interesting classroom session.

We send a thank you certificate to express Gratitude to each institution that helps. This helps to publicise your contribution.

4. You can drop books off at Co-Op foodstore collection points

PLEASE NOTE: The Co-op has temporarily suspended their service. Please contact us for details on where to drop books off in the meantime.

Getting the books to us is now much easier because the Co-op sponsorship has given us their more than 1,200 food stores as collection points. The Co-op, Leeds Co-op, Norwich and East Anglia Associations are now all participating. When you hand in your books to the Co-op food store please send your Ten pence donations to:

UNISON Manchester

6. Donations
The project costs a lot more than Ten pence per book. Some of the costs are covered by reduced shipping costs donated by Safmarine Corporation. Some of the haulage in Britain has been donated by Brittannia Deveraux and associated companies in the Brittannia Group. Pickfords have also helped.

We need more help in kind so that we can spread the load. Contact us by phone or by email. We need financial support to pay minimal salaries and rent on office and storage place. PLEASE DONATE.

Unison Manchester City branch has donated office space and facilities. This is a great help to us.

But we do need more direct financial help as well to cover all the incidental costs involved in running such an appeal. PLEASE DONATE.

For an information pack contact us by email, by fax 0161 254 7515, or by telephone 0161 254 7505.
