South Africa urgently requires books to help the new
generation become fluently literate. To develop a culture
of learning requires access to books. We have collected our first million books for children and are starting on our goal of sending a second million books to the children of South Africa. The project goes on. We need your help.
"Art and cultural resources must be accessible to everyone". That is the policy of the South African Government. This is something new and special because in the past most of the people were excluded on the grounds of skin colour.
The Umthathi Training Project in Grahamstown helps women and families to make vegetable gardens to improve their food intake. There is an indigenous batik project as part of an arts and crafts development and traditional meals are provided to groups of tourists.
The primary health care work of the Medical University of Southern Africa (Medunsa) reaches out to about two million people in the neighbourhood. Even when the pharmacy is only a picnic coolbox, babies get their shots!
Illiteracy is widespread. More than half South Africa's population cannot read or write. Medunsa Literacy for Development (Medlide) adult literacy project is closely related to issues of health. Community H.E.A.R.T. is shipping a mobile library complete with 10,000 publications for use in a region surrounding Medunsa (Medical University of Southern Africa) Northwest of Pretoria.
Rape Crisis was founded in Cape Town in 1976. Its counselling services fulfil an essential need for all victims of sexual assault and their families.
